The Holdup, or Flipping Computer Ate MY LIFE!
Okay, histrionics aside...since it seems I do, in fact, remember my LJ password I figured I'd vent a little and let you all know what the delay is about. A week ago my precious PC contracted a nasty case of sudden death syndrome. No symptoms, no warnings, no glitching, no BSODs...just one minute I was minding my business (working on the Beech update, actually) and the next I wasn't. Total shutdown, like a power outage, except nothing but my comp went out, and it wouldn't and won't start back up. Best guess is my power supply may no longer be up to snuff (though it, easily replaceable part that it is, is not completely dead) but it seems my motherboard was totally fried while the psu flailed about. I don't care about that as much as I might, I've been meaing to upgrade, but I rushed to order parts for my new build and not only have they not arrived yet, they haven't even shipped! I didn't spring for expedited shipping, which only too late am I questioning, because they usually deliver lightning fast regardless. Even if not, one week was a stretch but it wasn't going to kill me. This, however, is going into week 2...

Plus side: I don't think there's anything wrong with my hard drives so I'm not going to worry about that unless and until I know I have to. I fully expect to be back up and running if only they would just deliver my stuff! Downside: Once I've got my computer back (my preciousss and not this lousy laptop that I only use for backup net access so it's got No Stuffs) I'm going to be pretty damn busy playing catch up so I won't be able to even look at a sim for a while. Well, not unless I can get TS1 working on this old clunker but that'd just be to keep me amused while I wait. Widespot shenanigans, unfortunately, postponed a few more weeks :-(

I did manage to get about half of Round 3 played, though, and it was much fun, as always (and quite “dramatical”) so I'm itching to share. I'll get it done as soon as ever I can!

Oh dear. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that you'll be able to get your stuff soon - it looks like the more we need something, the slower it gets for it to arrive.

Thanks. That definitely looks like it's the case this time around. Stalking my email for tracking information, of course, isn't helping my patience!

Flipping computer indeed!
I too will be keeping my fingers crossed and hope that you get everyting sorted when your stuff finally arrives. I actually have backups on two different external harddrives for my cc, and as I make backups of my gameplay (via SimPe) every time I've finished playing, I try to save those backups to the external harddrives quite often too, just in case the worst should happen. I love my game so much! I'd cry my eyes out if I lost it.

Hoping to see an update from you soonish! The best of luck until then. And right - Happy New Year! :D

Re: Flipping computer indeed!
Yeah, I should be ashamed for being so cavalier. I haven't backed up properly in months, emphasis on the plural. It's one of those things that's so simple when it's embedded in my routine, plug-click-click and all safe from potential glitchiness but the moment it falls out of routine and is no longer automatic, I'm in trouble because it might be a while and "oh yeah...I'll do it tomorrow" for instance (in this particular instance) becomes "#$%^@!!!, where's all my stuff?" while looking at a backup that isn't nearly as recent as I thought.

However, I'm still chalking this particular mess up to 2014 an keeping my nice new year seeming pristine and incident-free, at least for the first week! Happy 2015!

Agh. Technology's great - when it works. This is why I back everything up to external hard drives. Then when one tech goes down you hook it up to the other tech and limp along. Running the game would kill your laptop, but you might be able to arrange pics, if you could get at the pics. You can only draft so much text without the pics to refer to.

Anyway, I hope it stays simple and that Hofsteader's Law doesn't mess you up too bad. (Hofsteader's Law states that every job will take longer than the estimate, even if the estimate takes Hofsteader's Law into account). You never realize how dependent you are on the computer till it fries on you.

Ah yes, Hofstadter's law...and I didn't take it into account, no, nor the ever-optimistic Mr. Murphy's either for that matter. I'll just have to take my chances. There really is no excuse for my not having backed up in so long. None. The good thing is that everything exchanged via email is automatically safe...so my students need never know...

I wouldn't even try to install TS2, even if I could get it to work, because just now I don't want to play the game, I want to play my game and I don't have anything remotely resembling a recent, that is within the last year or two (sheesh!), backup of my sims. Well, maybe a few SimPE rars, but no cc. So I know the first thing I'll be doing when I finally get my delivery. I do have comprehensive backups of TS1 stuff, though (because I haven't played it in years so there's been nothing new to add, of course) and I remember exactly where I left off in those stories and have all my discs so if I'm feeling motivated enough to go through the installation process I might make a nostalgia trip (at least wrap up the fallout from the party at the Faires' house). That might have to do me for now.
